Learning to skydive

Become a Licensed Skydiver

Did you enjoy a tandem skydive and want to take the experience to the next level? Skydive Toronto is proud to offer two different progressions to becoming a solo certified skydiver in 5-7 days (weather permitting). Each program begins with a one-day ground school and your jumps are conducted throughout the same week.

In our ground school, you will be taught all of the fundamentals required to successfully complete your first solo skydive. You will learn about your equipment, how to exit the airplane, freefall body position (arch), parachute piloting, and emergency procedures.

Requirements

Find out what you need to get skydiving

Before enrolling in one of our solo student progressions, it is mandatory to complete a tandem skydive as a prerequisite. If you did your prerequisite jump at another location, proof of your skydive will be required before you can enroll.

A signed entry to a logbook, first jump certificate, video or pictures of your tandem are all acceptable.

Are you 40+ years old? You are required to bring a medical clearance certificate from your family physician. Please review this document for more information. The maximum weight for solo skydivers is 214 lbs, and the minimum age is 18 years old. Good command of the English language is required, demonstrated through listening, writing, speaking and applying.

If all requirements are not met, Skydive Toronto reserves the right to cancel your solo progression course at any time.

GRADUAL FREEFALL PROGRESSION

Traditionally developed by the military, the Gradual Freefall Progression (GFP) is a tried and tested method for learning how to skydive. It has been taught by Skydive Toronto for over 40 years. Skydive Toronto uses state- of-the-art equipment with two Automatic Activation Devices (AAD) that only a few schools in the world use. If you're in a situation where you cannot activate your main or reserve parachute, the AADs will kick in.

This program consists of 12 levels:

  • The first level of this progression is ground school. (Hosted on Sundays starting at 10 a.m.)
  • Your first four skydives are made from 4,750 feet, dispatched by a Jumpmaster. You will exit the airplane with a static line deploying your main parachute.
  • Levels 1 & 2 consist of perfecting the skills learned in ground school.
  • Levels 3 & 4 teach you how to deploy your main parachute through training ripcord pulls.
  • Level 5 is a milestone—your first freefall! A 5-second delay followed by the deployment of your parachute.
  • Levels 6–12 are where freefall delays will increase in 5-second increments. Each skydive will consist of learning new skills in freefall and under parachute.

Once you are able to complete each required level, you will become a SOLO CERTIFIED SKYDIVER with the Canadian Sport Parachuting Association (CSPA)! You now have a nationally recognized certification and can jump at any school in Canada.

Staying current in this sport is very important. If it has been more than 60 days since your last skydive, you will need to repeat your last successful level. If it’s been more than 365 days since your last jump, you must retake the ground school. (Both of the above are additional costs.)

Progressive Freefall

This program allows you to experience a solo full-altitude freefall skydive from 12,250 feet on your first level! Initially, two instructors hold onto you as you exit the plane and continue to hold you stable throughout your freefall. The instructors use hand signs to communicate to you throughout your skydive—this is the key to the program. Rather than receiving feedback after your jump, the instructors are able to give you real-time feedback, so that you learn what the correct and incorrect body positions feel like immediately. This process enables a vastly accelerated learning curve.

This program consists of 10 levels:

  • Levels 1–3 are with two instructors. As you learn the correct freefall body position, altitude awareness, and how to deploy your own parachute.
  • Levels 4–10 are with one instructor. You have gained more control of your skydive and continue to grow your skills and awareness.

Once you are able to complete each required level, you will become a SOLO CERTIFIED SKYDIVER with the Canadian Sport Parachuting Association! You now have a nationally recognized certification and can jump at any school in Canada.

Staying current in this sport is very important. If it has been more than 60 days since your last skydive, you will need to repeat your last successful level. If it’s been more than 365 days since your last jump, you must take the Ground School over again. (Both of the above are additional costs.)

Novice Coaching Program

You’ve just completed your Solo Certification. The sense of achievement is enormous! The next question you’ll ask yourself is, “Where do I go from here?”

Our Novice Program takes skydivers through the next phase in their progression. Either the GFP or PFF program has taught you to be a competent skydiver. You can fall stable, deploy your own parachute at the correct altitude, and perform a landing. Now we need to teach you how to fly!

Through a series of coach jumps, you will learn additional skills and how to work relative to other skydivers in freefall. Your control and the manoeuvres that you can perform with your body will increase with every jump.

There is a new list of requirements that you will need to meet on each coach jump. At the end of this program, you’ll be the proud holder of an A-CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY/A-LICENCE with the Canadian Sport Parachuting Association. This is an internationally recognized licence that will allow you to jump at most dropzones around the world.
